China completed the delivery of 10 million kilograms of rice donation to Sri Lanka yesterday (19), the Chinese Embassy in Sri Lanka announced.
According to a tweet issued by the Chinese Embassy the final shipment carrying 1,000 MT of rice reached the Colombo Port yesterday.
This brings the total amount of rice donations delivered to Sri Lanka by China to 10,000 MT (10 million kilograms).
China said the donation is to firmly support the nutrition and studies of over 1 million students in 7,900 schools across the island.
China announced a donation of 10,000 metric tons of rice to Sri Lanka on Janauary 08 this year, to mark the 70th anniversary of the China-Sri Lanka Rubber-Rice Agreement.
Accordingly, the first consignment of 5,000 metric tons of rice arrived in Sri Lanka on June 28 and was officially handed over to Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardena, by the Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka Qi Zhenhong.
