MP Dayasiri Jayasekara Criticises Alleged Cronyism and Highlights Political Challenges

MP Dayasiri Jayasekara has criticised the current government for engaging in what he described as crony politics, despite claims to the contrary. Speaking during a parliamentary session, he alleged that friends from the University of Kelaniya and the University of Sri Jayewardenepura have been appointed as secretaries.

Explaining his political stance, Jayasekara stated:
“I joined the Samagi Jana Balawegaya because I chose the middle path, avoiding alignment with extreme right or left-wing forces. This Parliament has shown that even three members can influence the direction of the country with discipline and commitment.”

He further commented on the state of Sri Lanka’s traditional political parties, saying:
“The Sri Lanka Freedom Party and the United National Party have been decimated because they failed to allow for the emergence of new leadership. If the current government properly implements its mandate, we are ready to extend our support.”

On a constitutional matter, Jayasekara addressed the issue of presidential allowances, asserting:
“It is not constitutionally possible to abolish allowances for former presidents in a way that retrospectively affects past recipients.”

His remarks made in parliament this morning reflect ongoing debates on governance, political integrity, and constitutional obligations in the country.
