Three employees of Parliament have been dismissed following their conviction in cases of sexual harassment against female parliamentary staff. The decision was approved by the Speaker of Parliament, Hon. (Dr.) Jagath Wickramaratne, on the recommendation of the Secretary-General of Parliament, Mrs. Kushani Rohanadeera.
The allegations surfaced through media reports on July 30 and August 2, 2023, detailing incidents of sexual harassment occurring during 2021 and 2022. In response, an internal investigative committee was formed on August 4, 2023, under the directives of the then Speaker. The committee, chaired by the then Director of Administration, began its probe into the accusations.
As the investigation progressed, two employees were suspended on August 23, 2023. A comprehensive report was subsequently referred to the Attorney General for further legal advice. Acting on the Attorney General’s recommendations, the matter was escalated to the Bureau for the Prevention of Abuse of Children and Women, under the Inspector General of Police. The police investigation also resulted in the arrest and suspension of a third employee on January 30, 2024.
The accused employees requested a formal disciplinary inquiry, which was conducted by retired High Court Judge Mrs. Kusala Sarojini Weerawardena. After reviewing the findings, the inquiry concluded on December 23, 2024, and recommended the dismissal of all three employees.
The Hon. Speaker approved the recommendation, formalizing their dismissal effective from their respective suspension dates. This decisive action reflects Parliament’s commitment to maintaining a safe and respectful workplace for all staff.
