The opposition claims that nearly ten government MPs have removed academic titles such as “Doctor,” “Professor,” and “Engineer” from their Facebook profiles. This move reportedly follows controversies surrounding the authenticity of their educational qualifications.
According to opposition sources, the issue of questionable academic credentials gained traction after Speaker Ashoka Sapumal Ranwala resigned from his position. It is alleged that some MPs, whose qualifications were prominently displayed on campaign materials during the last election, have now abruptly erased those details from social media, raising suspicions.
An MP from the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) stated that the sudden removal of these qualifications could be linked to growing public scrutiny and discussions about the presentation of false academic credentials by several lawmakers in recent days. Fearing exposure of their true qualifications, these MPs may have chosen to conceal them.
The opposition has already initiated action under the Right to Information (RTI) Act to obtain details about the educational qualifications of these MPs. The SJB MP further asserted that if any lawmaker is found to have provided false information, steps will be taken to remove them not only from their current positions but also from Parliament.
