In a significant step towards strengthening bilateral ties, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake announced a series of transformative infrastructure projects following their high-level talks in New Delhi. These projects include the integration of the two nations’ power grids, the establishment of an oil pipeline from India to Sri Lanka, and the acceleration of the Sampur Solar Power Plant project. The announcement was made at the Hyderabad House during a joint press briefing, where both leaders shared their vision for enhancing economic cooperation and connectivity.
Earlier in the day, President Dissanayake was accorded a ceremonial welcome at Rashtrapati Bhavan, led by Indian President Droupadi Murmu. Following the formal reception, the two leaders engaged in discussions that focused on a range of bilateral issues.
As part of their commitment to enhancing the economic partnership, both leaders emphasized the importance of physical, digital, and energy connectivity between the two nations. Prime Minister Modi highlighted that the partnership would focus on investment-driven growth, with electricity grid connectivity and a multi-product petroleum pipeline being prioritized. Additionally, LNG will be supplied to Sri Lanka’s power plants to support its energy needs.
Discussions also covered broader areas of cooperation, including the rights of the Tamil people, the holding of provincial council elections in Sri Lanka, and the development of the ferry service between the two countries. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to the Sampur Solar Power Project, which will be fast-tracked to support Sri Lanka’s renewable energy goals.
The leaders also discussed other ongoing initiatives under India’s assistance, including the improvement of the signalling system on the Maho-Anuradhapura railway section and the revival of the Kankesanthurai Port, alongside further cooperation in education, agriculture, dairy, and fisheries sectors.
This meeting between President Dissanayake and Prime Minister Modi marks a continued commitment to enhancing Indo-Lanka relations through strategic infrastructure and cooperation projects.
