Reports indicate that the National People’s Power (NPP) government has decided to appoint Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne as the new Speaker of Parliament.
Dr. Wickramaratne, who secured 51,391 preferential votes, was ranked second on the NPP’s Polonnaruwa District candidate list. A former medical administrator, he is an alumnus of Gal Amuna Maha Vidyalaya in Polonnaruwa and Dharmaraja College in Kandy.
According to sources, Dr. Wickramaratne is expected to assume office as Sri Lanka’s 23rd Speaker of Parliament during the session scheduled for Tuesday (17).
