The Auditor General’s Department has revealed that 78 railway engines requiring repairs have been left idle in running sheds and the Ratmalana Main Railway Workshop for over seven years since 2017.
According to the Audit Report, 47 of the 103 M-Class engines in the rolling block are undergoing repairs, with each engine valued between Rs. 150 million and Rs. 785 million.
Additionally, 21 of the 133 S-Class engines, valued between Rs. 8 million and Rs. 216 million each, have been left unattended in running sheds for over seven years.
The report also highlighted that ten M-2 class railway engines, purchased for Rs. 7,650 million, were withdrawn from service due to poor engine performance and technical defects.
