Use of Academic Titles Restricted to Active Service, Says UGC

The former Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC), Senior Professor Sampath Amaratunge had issued a circular in July, notifying all university vice-chancellors, faculty deans, and directors of higher education institutions that the titles of Senior Professor, Professor, and Associate Professor can only be used during the period an individual serves at a university or higher education institution.

According to the circular, this decision was made following a recommendation by the Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE) and was formally adopted during the 1,120th meeting of the UGC on July 3, 2024.

The circular further clarifies that retired professors may use the title Emeritus Professor only if it has been formally conferred by a university.

The UGC has instructed all universities and higher education institutions to include this updated regulation in appointment letters for newly assigned Senior Professors, Professors, and Associate Professors. This ensures that academic titles are used appropriately and align with the latest policy.
