Special Party Leaders’ Meeting to Discuss Tomorrow’s Parliamentary Agenda
A special meeting of party leaders, chaired by the Deputy Speaker, will be held this evening (16) to discuss tomorrow’s (17) parliamentary proceedings, including the appointment of a new Speaker of the House.
Earlier today, the ruling party and the opposition, held separate discussions regarding the appointment of the Speaker. Following these discussions, the party leaders’ meeting is expected to deliberate further on the matter.
The first task of tomorrow’s parliamentary session will be the election of the Speaker. Both the government and the opposition have already proposed candidates for the position. While the Deputy Speaker is capable of managing parliamentary affairs, the intervention of the Speaker is essential for handling special matters.
The position of Speaker became vacant following the resignation of Ashoka Sapumal Ranwala. Several names have since been nominated for the post, and the party leaders’ meeting today is expected to hold an extensive discussion on the matter.
