Vote on third reading of 2023 Budget today

The final vote on the 77th Budget of Independent Sri Lanka is scheduled to be held at 5 pm today (08).

Second reading of the budget was passed by a majority of 37 votes in Parliament on November 22 with 121 members voting in favor while 84 voted against.  

The SJB, JVP, SLFP and SLPP dissidents voted against the Budget.

Tamil Makkal Thesiya Kootan (TMTK) MP CV Wigneswaran abstained from voting.

The debate on the Second Reading of the Appropriation Bill for the fiscal year 2023 commenced in Parliament on November 15.

President Ranil Wickremesinghe, in his capacity as the Minister of Finance, presented the Budget to Parliament on November 14.

The debate on the committee stage of the Appropriation Bill commenced on November 22 continue until today (December 08) excluding Sundays.

According to the 2023 budget, the total expenditure for 2023 will be Rs. 5,819 billion (19.2%) and the total revenue and grants will be Rs. 3,415 billion (11.3%).

Meanwhile, the budget deficit for the fiscal year 2023 is estimated at Rs. 2,404 billion, which is 7.9 as a percentage.
