Responding to questions by the media as to the shortage of rice and the cost of dry rations being increased, Minister of Irrigation Chamal Rajapaksa said that if there is a price increase in rice, the alternate would be to eat green gram or manioc.
He made this statement while speaking to media yesterday (02).
“If the cost of rice has gone up, that indicates a shortage of rice. I don’t think that would happen. Although there is no rice, our ancestors are green gram and manioc. There is large green gram cultivation in Tissamaharama. There is cowpea in Anuradhapura. The Government will buy that,” said Minister Rajapaksa.
He further questioned the media by asking if it was wrong to consume green gram and manioc instead of bread.
“Manioc is also good for cancer,” he quipped.
