Police cracked down on a large protest organized by fishermen of Modara yesterday, whose livelihoods have been jeopardized owing to the MV XPress Pearl incident.
Following the MV XPress Pearl incident and the ensuing leakage of oil & nitric acid to sea water fishermen have been left destitute unable to engage in fishing.
The daily wages of fishermen in the area have been entirely cut off with the government’s promises of compensation yet to fully materialize.
One month has elapsed since the XPress Pearl caught fire in Sri Lanka’s territorial waters.
Members of the Front-Line Socialist Party including Party members Pubudu Jayagoda & Duminda Nagamuwa who joined the protest have sustained injuries at the hands of police & have been admitted to hospitals.
Fishermen engaged in the protest said that police had groped their private parts during the protest in order to subdue them.
The police crackdown on the peaceful protest by the fisherfolk in Modara has drawn much condemnation against the government of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
