It is revealed that the Nuwara Eliya Municipal Council had convened the recently concluded annual “Spring Festival” (Wasantha Udana) despite the Director General of Health Services Dr. Asela Gunawardena having informed in writing that approval could not be granted for the event.
The Director General of Health Services had earlier informed the Nuwara Eliya Regional Director of Health Services that approval could not be granted to for the festival, following a decision drawn during the Health Development Committee meeting held on March 25.
The letter in this regard had been dispatched on March 31.
The letter had specifically informed all officials concerned including the Mayor of Nuwara Eliya Chandana Lal Karunatilake to refrain from organizing the Spring Festival due to the resurgence of the COVID19 virus.
In the wake of this development, the Central Province Governor Lalith U. Gamage has instructed the Central Province Commissioner of Local Government to conduct an immediate inquiry into having organised the event contrary to health instructions.
In a special statement to the media, the Governor of the Central Province said that the Mayor of the Nuwara Eliya Municipal Council Chandana Lal Karunatilake had acted in an arbitrary manner in having organized the event.
The Governor also said that he had received information that employees of the Municipal Council who had participated in the Festival held on the banks of the Gregory Lake in Nuwara Eliya had been each provided with a 175 ml bottle of liquor, together with their lunch.
However, Police Media Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana stated that an investigation is underway to ascertain whether quarantine regulation had been violated during the festival.
